Oregano (Origano vulgare) behoort tot de groep van Lamiaceae. Het wordt ook wel eens wilde marjolein of wilde oregano genoemd. Rozemarijn, tijm en munt behoren tot dezelfde botanische familie. Oregano komt uit het Grieks van de woorden ‘oros’ (berg) en ‘ganos’ (vreugde).

Oregano bevat de twee bijzondere stoffen carvacrol en tymol. Deze chemische verbindingen zijn tevens in grote hoeveelheden in de olie te vinden. Carvacrol is de meest onderzochte inhoudsstof. Het is een fenol en kenmerkt zich door de pittige, bittere smaak met een hint van een warmtesensatie.
